When I go to customize the only widgets I see are “Blog Sidebar, Footer 1,2,3,4” None of the newspaper X widgets are available unless I put them in the footers or Blog Sidebar.

Make sure you have all the necessary plugins activated, first of all, companion plugin must be activated to see the theme widgets

I got it now, I poked and swore at it for a bit. found somewhere that “homepage” had to set right. Somehow I missed that in the videos. Now it seems to load slowly at times and the photos at out of focus for some posts.

yep, they are only available on the homepage only, for inner pages you may use Page builders if you don’t want to use default page editor of WordPress
