How do I make my blog posts appear as a summary instead of full text?

Hi, I’m having a problem with my posts. I have set categories as my main homepage menu instead of pages and when I create new posts I make sure to check of which category this post falls under so it would show up under my menu. However, I want these posts to show up as summary in my category pages instead of the full text post. I have also made sure that I checked of “show posts as summary” instead of “show posts as full text” in the settings on WordPress. So how can I turn them into summaries? any help is greatly appreciated.
